Sometime in the near future, the electrical grid will fail. Communications will cease. Food distribution will grind to a halt. Experts say modern society is just nine meals away from chaos. This is a story about the night it happens.
Sargent Red Morton is a veteran prison guard, left alone in the world by the tragic deaths of his wife and son. Caught in a spiral of despair, his only remaining family are the young guards who look to him for leadership in a concrete and iron cage housing 2000 of the worst society has to offer. He'll have to pull himself together if he wants to hold on to his spot as leader of the unit.
Sy and Kara Bradshaw are a brother and sister team trying to keep their little hunting lodge alive in an economic depression. Only by entertaining and befriending the fabulously wealthy have they survived in a world with little opportunity. But Kara has secrets of her own. She'll have to keep those secrets from driving a wedge among her friends and family.
Darwin King is billionaire business man on a hunting trip at the Bradshaw's lodge. There he's joined by three generations of the Casey family, one of his richest and most profitable clients. Together they've built a business empire spanning the globe. This is a special trip, one the elder Casey will use to announce ambitious plans for everyone involved.
The night the lights fail, Red and his guards are surrounded in the darkened labyrinth of the prison, trying to find a way to rescue their own and stay alive against drug crazed inmates. Sy and Kara shepherd local townspeople to the safety of their lodge in the woods, away from rampaging inmates escaping the prison by the hundreds. Darwin King aims to help the Bradshaw's survive, and in the meantime find out exactly what his friends the Caseys know about the cause of the catastrophe. They all wait for someone, anyone, to come and help save them.
Together, their paths will intertwine in the little town of Mt. Sterling, Illinois on the night of humanity’s greatest disaster. As the lights go out on civilization, each will be challenged to survive in a world driven mad by fear of the dark, fear of hunger, fear of the unknown. Those sworn to protect the innocent will forsake them, while common people will arise to perform heroic feats of bravery. Now, at the dawn of darkness, everyone will find out what they’re really made of.

This is a stand alone novel set in the world of Fortress Farm (www.FortressFarm.com). There is a character in the Fortress Farm novels known as the Boar King. This is the beginning of his origin story. It is not necessary to read the other novels to read A Haunt of Jackals.
